Mini Summer Styling Series #1: The Boxer Short
Yes, I was ~influenced~

Summer is here ~ allegedly~ (as I write this, it is currently raining and only 60 degrees in NYC) and I am not going to lie to you guys; I’m not a summer girl. Chaffing drives me crazy, and I hate that I can only take off so many layers if I get overheated. I love adding layers if it’s cold.
So, I decided to start a mini-series with all of you on summer styling, in the hope that I will, in fact, inspire myself. My references are from my Pinterest board, and I will be pulling images from there, so all credit goes to the original creators of the pins.
Now, we’re going to start this off a little differently than the others in this series, since I pinned these images after purchasing these items. Normally, I would pull the outfit formulas from Pinterest and break them down; however, this one is inspired by a purchase I made. After all, I’m just a girl. 🎀
Boxer Shorts
I am a hardcore Swiftie, as many of you know and I’ve even met Taylor! There are a lot of things Taylor Swift does better than most artists, and one of those things is that she creates incredible merch. So when I saw that she released a summer collection inspired by one of my favorite albums (in case you’re curious, I’m a reputation sun, TTPD moon, and of course, a 1989 rising.) I automatically clicked the link and checked out the collection. The piece that stood out to me right away were the boxer shorts. I don’t own a pair, but it’s a trend that I’ve admired over the past couple of years. If you want to know about how I met Taylor, you can check out this post:
In the summer, I’m typically a dress-only kind of person ( complete with bike shorts underneath), but I want to diversify my summer wardrobe a bit more. Last year, my friend Mari influenced me ( well, told me during a shopping challenge) that I needed a pair of denim shorts in my collection, and she was right. I wore them all summer long, and I’m eager to pull them out again. So this summer, I really want to focus on wearing my skirts and shorts a bit more.

I thought about the Taylor Swift boxer shorts, but I was on the fence. Then my Pinterest algorithm started to show me styling boxer shorts a bit more, and I did a little research myself. When it comes to adding new clothes to my collection, I ask myself a series of questions before making the purchase, and my big question is, can I think of at least five ways to style this piece? Thanks to Pinterest ( since my brain was fried this week), I was able to do that.
My best friend Emily Polner did a great job of sharing all the things that she thinks about before making a new purchase, and I do something similar, so I’m going to share her post for you to check out.
Ultimately, I ended up grabbing the boxer shorts because I can’t control myself. I also got the matching button down. I’m going to share with you some ways I plan to style these shorts. I should also mention that I chose the blue and white striped pair, which is why every look is styled with blue and white boxer shorts.
Matching Set
I love a good set, and yes, this is the website styling image, not something from Pinterest. For me personally, a matching set of any kind makes me look and feel like I have my life together, which, to be honest, I really need. I feel like I’m always in chaos mode, so something like a set of grounds me and makes me look effortless, and I love that for me.
Grey Top + Boxer Shorts
Grey and blue is a combination I adore, and after discovering that I’m more of a cool-toned girly girl, I’ve been enjoying this color combo a lot. Yes, I bought the boxer shorts, but I already own a ton of grey pieces, so I can easily experiment. More on how I determined a cool tone here:
I've Gotten My Seasonal Color Analysis Done Three Different Times And Here's My Honest Thoughts.
I love the concept of seasonal color analysis. When it first became a trend, I thought it would be super fun. At the time, I was feeling lost in my wardrobe, so I thought something like this could help me figure it all out.
Plain White Tee/ Tank Top + Boxer Shorts

A basic but classic look for a reason. I love how crisp and clean this looks! If I’m a little cold, I can always throw on one of my white button-down shirts or a cardigan.
Frilly White Top + Boxer Shorts

This is quite similar to the one above, but replacing your classic white tee with a more feminine and boho-style top elevates this look a lot. I’m also about mixing feminine and masculine elements in a look, and this is a great example of that. In case you’re wondering what is at the top of my wish list, it’s actually a white frilly top.
Graphic Tee + Boxer Shorts

Yes, this is another similar style, but hear me out. An oversized graphic tee or crewneck adds an element of fun to this look, depending on what kind of graphic tee you have. I own a couple of these, mostly from concerts, but I think it would be super cute paired with these. I also deffo could use some non-concert related graphic tees! Who knows, maybe I’ll have a post on that coming soon.
Black Top + Boxer Shorts

This is a combo that I wouldn’t really think about throwing together. Since these shorts are both blue and white, my brain would automatically pair them with one of those colors versus a third color. I love the contrast in these looks, and I think it would be super fun to experiment with.
Pop Of Color Top + Boxer Shorts

Personally, I don't wear the color yellow because I don’t think it works on me. Almost every time I wear it, I look like I have jaundice ( so everyone asks me if I’m sick), so this isn’t the color combo for me. However, I can see the appeal of butter yellow paired with blue and white boxer shorts.
I’ve also seen a ton of people pair blue and white boxer shorts with a pop of red, and that feels like something I can easily try and see if I like it. Other pops of color that I could experiment with for this kind of look would be pink or green.
Let me know in the comments below which one of these combos you’re going to try this summer. To stay updated on my latest fashion content, follow me on Instagram , YouTube, and TikTok!
